RFID Detector

also known as a RAT (Radiation Activity Tester) or RATs or an RFID Power Sensor

When an RFID system in a product works for identification and tracking purposes, it seems like magic.

When it doesn’t…the user has no idea why the magic doesn’t perform and the product – and its manufacturer – suffers. The RFID Detector tells the installer or troubleshooter immediately that the front end is operating. It also indicates that each of the associated antennas is operating, a fact that can be difficult to prove by reading a test RFID tag.

Used heavily in enterprise supply chain management, Radio Frquency Identification (RFID) tags are implanted into many different types of products for identification and tracking purposes. They offer quantifiable efficiency and cost-saving benefits, do not need contact or line-of-sight in order to be read, and in many instances are being used as replacements for barcode tags.

Every RFID tag implanted in a product contains an integrated circuit and antenna, and is dependent upon the functionality of a corresponding RFID reader to effectively track needed information.

RFID Detector2

As with all technology, sometimes it breaks, even during the manufacturing and installation process.

A non-functional RFID reader may have suffered a hardware failure, a triggering sensor may not be working, or communications with a back-end system may have been interrupted.  The technican has to determine whether the system is radiating early on in the troubleshooting process.  The Montie Design RFID Detector tells the installer or troubleshooter immediately if the front end is operating. It also indicates that each of the associated antennas is operating, a fact that can be difficult to prove by reading a test RFID tag.

Specifications

  1. Credit card sized (3-3/8 inches x 2 1/8 inches)
  2. Priceless installation and diagnostic tool
  3. Works with all UHF RFID systems (including EU ETSI-compliant systems)
  4. Gives a positive indication that each antenna is operating
  5. Bright Blue LED is visible even in the brightest sunlight
  6. Completely passive – no batteries required
  7. Environmentally friendly and completely passive because it doesn’t require batteries

Directions for Use:

Hold the card by the long edges and move it towards the antenna (parallel to the plane of the RFID antenna). If the RFID antenna is active, the center of the card will light up with a blue light. Depending on the antenna and the power level radiated by the RFID system, the light will illuminate as far as 2 feet from the antenna. In a multi-antenna system, the light will blink on and off at the switching rate of the antenna system as the card is put into each antenna field. If the RFID system is triggered by an external sensor, the triggering can be checked by putting the card in the normal field of the antenna and triggering the sensor on and off.
