Also, founded the NCSingleParent.com website. This project included a broad spectrum of tasks including developing the concept and website, working with the legal community to develop the Attorney Rating system on the website, interfacing with print and television media, and traveling to trade shows to promote the website.
Industrial Design and Mechanical Packaging Engineer – GretagMacbeth in RTP, NC [April 01 to March 03] – was inventor or co-inventor for 2 out of 3 patents awarded for release of new color measurement (Color I 5 -- spectrophotometer) product in March of 2003. This instrument was designed in half the time of previous instruments.
Color I 5 Instrument -- responsible for designing the enclosure for the device including the industrial design (creative) and the mechanical design (structural, mechanical, and thermal). Patentable activity included:
- Industry first: aperture plate detection method that used conventional tactile switch technology to allow aperture plate detection in a space of less than 1/16 of an inch. - Industry first: self-damping sample arm used common automotive technology (gas spring) to eliminate the problem of breakage of fragile samples.

Other actives included development of
- conceptual designs for portable instruments - user-centric accessories - mass produced (injection-molded) calibration stations that work with GretagMacbeth’s proprietary software to allow the user to calibrate handheld instruments in the field. - multifunctional parts
Industrial Design / Mechanical Engineering – Montie Design in Cary [Oct 99 to April 01] – Provided industrial and mechanical design services to various clients for products utilizing various production methods including injection molding, CNC machining, and metal forming. Projects include:
Assistive Technology -- for biomedical company in Chapel Hill, NC. Responsible for doing the industrial design necessary to package their auto focus binoculars for individuals with macular degeneration. (http://www.montie.com/assistive_technology.htm)
Blade / Rack-Mounted Server Enclosure – for computer manufacturer in Silicon Valley. Worked with third party, industrial design firm to translate their aesthetic model into a manufactureable design that was self-injecting/ejecting and would comply with EMI/EMC directives. (http://www.montie.com/inject-eject_mechanism.htm)
Heated Accessory for Biomedical Assay Instrument -- developed accessory for biomedical instrument manufacturer in Hillsborough, NC. This accessory had to conform to the existing aesthetic of the instrument will packaging additional functionality into an existing volume. (http://www.montie.com/lab_equipment.htm)
Speaker Grill for Mass-Transit – injection-molded replacement used during retrofits of mass-transit systems (http://www.montie.com/speaker_grill.htm)
Electronics Enclosure for Mass-Transit – extruded aluminum enclosure housing electronic, way-finding system used in self-annunciating system in mass-transit system.
CompactPCI Front Panel Development
Mechanical Engineer -- Matrix Corporation in Raleigh [Nov 97 to Oct 99] -- implemented virtual prototyping inside of SolidWorks, allowing Matrix to build production units without the necessity of a physical prototype reducing the design cycle time by 50%. Products developed included:
- ATR Enclosure for Attack Helicopter – used forced convection and conduction to cool rugged enclosure in conformance with Mil standards. (http://www.montie.com/airborne.htm)
- Modular Enclosure for Ground-Mobile Environment – used forced convection to cool the contents of the enclosure. The card cage in the enclosure was shock mounted (compliant with Mil-Std-810) to qualify for use in a ground-mobile, military environment (http://www.montie.com/ground.htm)
Other duties included
- EMI/FCC certification of wearable computer - Development of CompactPCI and VME Front Panels and PCB mechanicals - Packaging for miniature (1.25 x 1.5 inches), rugged-duty, Ethernet converter
Applications Engineer — Design Automation Incorporated in Raleigh, NC [Jan 96 to Nov 97] – involved in the initial rollout and market penetration of SolidWorks (MCAD software) and RevWorks (reverse engineering software) in the NC/SC area.
Technical Consultant — SBC Safety and Design in Cary, NC [August 93 to December 95] – worked with various clients, include Nokia, to develop new products and address OSHA compliance issues. Authored “The Businessman’s Guide to OSHA”.
